Seminar o knjizi Mute Compulsion

On će izložiti tezu da naš savremeni trenutak—obeležen usponom krajnje desnice, fragmentisanim borbama, nekontrolisanim kapitalizmom, produženom ekonomskom stagnacijom, deindustrijalizacijom i sve gorom klimatskom krizom—zahteva preispitivanje utopijskog mišljenja.

Seminar on the book Mute Compulsion, 11:00h – 14:00h Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory, Kraljice Natalije 45, 4th Floor
The Laboratory for Social Critique of the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory will host Danish philosopher Søren Mau for a seminar on his book Mute Compulsion. In this book, Mau attempts to conceptualize a specific form of power that he sees as characteristic of the capitalist social formation. More precisely, he is interested in the so-called “mute compulsion” that economic relations under capitalism exert on individuals, social groups, and institutions. Mau’s primary aim is to highlight the specificity of this form of power in a way that does not see it as mediated by ideology, culture, or state mechanisms.During the seminar, participants will offer their interventions and engage in discussion with Mau to point out both the strengths and weaknesses of his research, as well as its relevance to both global and local socio-political contexts.

Lecture by Søren Mau: A Materialist Defence of Utopianism, 18:00h – 20:00h Belgrade Cultural Center Hall, Kolarčeva 6
Ever since Marx dismissed the ‘utopian socialists’ and declared that “communism is the most determined opponent of all utopianism,” Marxists have been skeptical of attempts to provide detailed descriptions of a post-capitalist world. Utopian thought has been deemed impossible, useless, and undesirable. In this talk, Søren Mau will argue that Marxist anti-utopianism contains many important insights but is not equally valid in all historical contexts. He will contend that our contemporary moment—marked by the rise of the far right, fragmented struggles, unchecked capitalism, prolonged economic stagnation, deindustrialization, and escalating climate crises—calls for a reevaluation of utopian thought. Drawing on a philosophical critique of classical anti-utopianism and a historical analysis, Mau offers a materialist defense of utopian thinking as an integral part of the struggle for freedom in the 21st century.
